About the book
The Science of Lesson Planning: High-Impact Practices That Deepen Student Learning by Lori Cohen, published by ISTE+ASCD. Everything in this app — the framework, the planner, the strategies — comes from the book, where each key feature gets a full chapter of stories, research, and tools.
Transformative lesson planning moves through five phases. Think of them not as a rigid checklist, but as a dynamic cycle that honors both the science of learning and the art of teaching. Within the phases live ten key features, each a high-leverage design move. A single lesson doesn’t need all ten at full volume: pick one or two to bring to the foreground.

Phase 1
Center People and Purpose
Before committing to specific plans, identify learning goals and analyze student needs to establish a strong foundation. Start with who are my learners? and why does this content matter to them?
Planner element: Ground the Learning
Key feature 1 Psychological Safety
Create learning conditions where students feel safe taking risks, making mistakes, and engaging in productive struggle.
Why it matters
Psychological safety is a precondition for learning; when students feel threatened, their brains prioritize self-protection over higher-order thinking. Its building blocks are respect for who students are and a genuine sense of belonging: designing with students, not just for them.
Ask yourself
How am I building in psychological safety?
Who might be experiencing this lesson differently, and what small shift would make the biggest difference for them?
Doing it well
Offer multiple ways for students to share what they know.
Use inclusive language, content, and examples; keep the environment predictable.
Co-create classroom agreements and revisit them.
Respond to errors with curiosity, not correction, and practice loving accountability.
Watch out for
Cold calls and “popcorn reading” that turn class into a high-stakes quiz show.
“No, that’s not it. Anyone else?” responses.
Defensive learning: memorizing just enough to avoid failure rather than genuinely grappling with ideas.

Key feature 2 Context
Connect abstract concepts to tangible, relevant experiences that bridge classroom content with students’ lived experiences.
Why it matters
The brain’s salience network is a gatekeeper, constantly asking “Does this matter to me?” When we create emotional connections to content, we change the chemistry of motivation and attention. “When will I ever use this?” isn’t defiance — it’s a plea for relevance.
Ask yourself
What do people in this subject area do in life?
Whose context am I centering? Might my go-to example be a barrier for some students?
Doing it well
Build on funds of knowledge — the skills, practices, and experiences students bring from home and community.
Situate learning in authentic activity and real application.
Let students generate their own analogies and connections.
Watch out for
The “Tossing Pooh” lesson: without a clear, compelling context, even the most engaging activity is just a gimmick, a bridge to nowhere.
Teacher-centric metaphors and pop-culture references that leave half the room behind.

Phase 2
Explore Pathways to Learning
Investigate multiple teaching strategies and pathways to the goal. This is the playful, expansive phase where you become a curator of learning experiences rather than a deliverer of curriculum.

Key feature 3 Engagement
Offer multiple entry points through personalization and choice to accommodate different learning preferences and needs.
Why it matters
When people have agency in a task, they engage more fully and think more flexibly, and choosing strengthens intrinsic motivation. The UDL premise: barriers to learning are not inherent in the student but in the design of the curriculum and learning environment, in our own biases, or in systemic factors.
Ask yourself (when a lesson fizzles)
Where did students have a genuine say in what they were doing?
How was the lesson designed so students could feel capable and successful?
In what ways did students feel connected to you or to peers?
Doing it well
Offer 3–5 authentic choices with equal rigor: real differences in process or product, not pen-versus-pencil.
Entry points (narrative, quantitative, aesthetic, experiential, foundational) are design options, not student types.
Teach students how to choose; build agency in stages: structured → open-ended → co-created → self-directed.
Lay the explicit foundation first; that’s what makes exploration meaningful.
Watch out for
The illusion of variety while you still dictate all the terms: engagement that is, at best, compliant.
Choice overload, and choices that are superficial variations.

Key feature 4 Learning Strategies
Intentionally incorporate evidence-based techniques to cement student learning.
Why it matters
We’re prone to metacognitive illusions: mistaking the feeling of learning for the fact of learning. The shift is from strategies that feel effective to strategies that are effective, embracing desirable difficulties along the way.
The big six
Retrieval practice — pull learning out with low-stakes brain workouts.
Spaced practice — don’t cram; circle back deliberately over days and weeks.
Interleaving — mix problem types so students choose the right tool for the job.
Dual coding — pair words with meaningful visuals, not decorative ones.
Elaboration — explain and connect: “What makes you say that?”
Concrete examples — make it real before making it abstract.
Doing it well
Name the strategy while you model it, so students add it to their own toolbox.
Teach the metacognition cycle: plan, monitor, evaluate. It can add the equivalent of seven months of academic progress in a year (EEF, 2024).
Watch out for
Poor proxies for learning: nodding, correct answers right after your explanation, a worksheet of identical problems.
Rereading and highlighting as study; blocked practice mistaken for mastery.

Phase 3
Design the Learning Journey
Turn possibilities into a coherent sequence with thoughtful timing, transitions, and scaffolding. You’re the DJ, orchestrating a playlist that works with students’ brains, not against them.
Planner element: Explore Content and Express Learning
Key feature 5 Sequencing
Design the flow and pacing of lessons to leverage brain-based learning principles while managing cognitive demands.
Why it matters
Attention is not infinite: most students benefit from a shift roughly every 10 to 20 minutes, a chance to process, move, or change modes. Working memory is a small table; your job is to chunk the complexity (intrinsic load), clear the clutter (extraneous load), and protect the productive struggle (germane load).
The lesson arc: Launch · Explore · Land
Launch (5–15 min): activate, frame the “why,” provide explicit instruction in small chunks.
Explore (25–40 min): the heart of the lesson, where students do the heavy cognitive lifting.
Land (5–10 min): consolidate with quick retrieval, make learning visible, reconnect to the “why.”
Bridge with transitions: look back (consolidate), look forward (prime), shift (reset energy).
Doing it well — BEAT
Build the arc · Ease the load · Alternate the modes · Track the learning.
Start concrete and embodied before abstract; plan when scaffolds come off.
Watch out for
A 45-minute lecture without a change of pace is a losing battle against how attention behaves.
Make thinking processes transparent through routines, language, and documentation of learning.
Why it matters
“Engagement is the appetizer; thinking is the main course.” A classroom that buzzes with activity is not always a classroom that buzzes with thought. The language of thinking yields more elaborated, evidence-based reasoning, and raising wait time from about 1 second to 3 or more produces dramatically richer responses (Rowe, 1986).
Ask yourself
How do I know students were thinking, not just doing?
Do our classroom phrases signal curiosity and support, or performance and judgment?
Doing it well
Use a few thinking routines repeatedly, until each is “a way we think in this class.”
Plan question ladders: gather & recall → process & connect → apply & extend.
Honor struggle: the groan zone eventually yields the grown zone; treat mistakes as data.
Document thinking so fleeting thoughts become durable artifacts.
Watch out for
Classrooms of excellent mimics who can perform tasks but not explain their thinking.
Calling on the first hand up; it signals that speed matters more than depth.

Phase 4
Implement and Adjust
Put the plan into action while staying flexible and responsive. Even the most perfectly designed lesson plan is, at best, a well-researched hypothesis.
Planner element: Assess Learning
Key feature 7 Assessment
Assess for learning to understand progress and adjust instruction in real time.
Why it matters
“Assessment is not the finish line; it’s the compass.” Assessment doesn’t just measure learning; it shapes it, and every assessment decision communicates values. The question: does it create possibilities for success, or barriers to it?
Ask yourself
Not just “What am I teaching?” but “How will my students and I know where we are, where we’re going, and how we’re going to get there?”
If students remember only five things a year from now, what should those be?
Doing it well
Plan hinge-point questions: wrong answers built from real misconceptions, with an if/then response decided in advance.
Co-create success criteria with students (“rubric-ification”).
Build in revision and retakes; flex formats to student assets, not deficits.
Watch out for
Rubrics where the definition of success lives only in the teacher’s head.
Speed-worship, docking for lateness, and averaging early mistakes with later growth.
Provide and invite timely, specific information that moves learning forward: teacher to student, peer to peer, and student to teacher.
Why it matters
Wise feedback pairs high expectations with high support: “I’m pushing you because I see your potential.” Praise alone feels good but gives the brain no problem to solve; harshness alone primes students for defense rather than learning.
Ask yourself
Does my feedback feed up (where are we going?), feed back (how is it going?), and feed forward (what’s next?)
Am I working at the task level only, or building process and self-regulation?
Doing it well
Timely, specific, actionable, and focused: one high-leverage suggestion beats a page of commentary.
Give students time to actually use the feedback.
Seek feedback yourself (“What part of today’s instructions confused you?”) and report back what changes, what doesn’t, and why.
Watch out for
“You’re so smart!”: self-level praise that risks fixed mindsets and offers nothing actionable.
Feedback dumps that overwhelm; vague asks like “Was that lesson good?”

Phase 5
Reflect and Refine
The “Outro”: intentional, meaningful closure that cements the learning and fuels future growth: the often-overlooked phase where experience becomes expertise.
Planner element: Close the Lesson
Key feature 9 Celebration
Recognize growth, effort, and breakthrough moments to reinforce positive learning experiences and deepen understanding.
Why it matters
Celebration is cognitive glue: recognizing the strategy that led to success makes it more likely to be used again. And it’s not the opposite of rigor. Done right, celebration is rigor. Rewards are conditional on the product; celebrations recognize the journey.
Ask yourself
Who gets celebrated in my classroom, and for what?
How do we make sure our celebrations include everyone?
Doing it well
Ritualize endings; predictability is calming.
Broaden what counts: perseverance, an insightful question, a creative risk, a fear overcome.
No candy or extra credit required; the celebration itself is the reward.
Celebrate your own practice too, with a team protocol or a solo Victory Log.
Watch out for
Endings that simply evaporate in the rush to the next topic.
Transactional prize systems that undermine intrinsic motivation; celebrating only final products and top performers.
Analyze what worked and what didn’t to continuously improve teaching practice.
Why it matters
For students, reflection is the engine of metacognition, agency, and transfer. For teachers, it’s how we become reflective practitioners: thinking in action, reflecting on action, and widening the lens from “Is this student off task?” to “Is this curriculum or lesson serving all students?”
Ask yourself
Did the lesson work, and for whom?
How might my background and biases be shaping my interactions?
What will I stop, start, and continue?
Doing it well
Build student closure into every lesson, not as a one-off assignment.
Run the per-feature audits (see Troubleshoot) and small action-research loops: notice → change → try → study → refine.
Pair reflection with celebration; on its own, reflection can feel like continual critique that leads to burnout.
Watch out for
Skipping closure in the rush to cover the next topic.
Narrow-lens reflection that keeps the focus squarely on you.

Stage 1 · Before you explore the framework
The first draft
From the Introduction: do this before spending time in the other tabs, if you can resist.
Your task is to plan how you would teach a group of students how to play the game Rock Paper Scissors. That’s it. Spend five minutes jotting down your plan. Don’t overthink it; just trust your professional instincts.
The goal wasn’t to create the “perfect” lesson, but to get a snapshot of your thinking. Hold on to it; it’s the first piece of data for our work together.
Stage 2 · After meeting the framework
Revisit your plan
From Chapter 1 — browse The Framework tab first, then take five minutes to tinker. Don’t rewrite the whole thing; choose a few key features and brainstorm enhancements.
Psychological safety: How could you introduce the game in a way that makes every student feel safe to try it, even if they feel clumsy or silly at first?
Context: Could this simple game be a metaphor for something bigger: conflict resolution, probability, decision making?
Engagement: How could you offer choice? Could students invent their own version with new gestures? What will make the learning meaningful and challenging?
Sequencing: How will you pace the lesson to maintain energy while managing cognitive demands? When might students need a shift in activity type?
Notice how even a simple game opens up new possibilities when we plan with intention.
Stage 3 · When you’ve explored all five phases
The final design challenge
From the Conclusion — now, with everything you’ve explored, imagine that lesson today.
Phase 1 Center People and Purpose
How might you co-create agreements for play to ensure psychological safety?
Could the game become a shared context for exploring probability, conflict resolution, or even game theory?
Phase 2 Explore Pathways to Learning
What meaningful choices could you offer to increase engagement — letting students invent a new version of the game, or choose their role in a class tournament?
What learning strategies, like interleaving the standard game with a variation, could make the learning more durable?
Phase 3 Design the Learning Journey
How would you sequence the lesson to manage energy, moving from active play to focused reflection?
How could you build a culture of learning by asking “What makes you say that?” when a student shares their winning strategy?
Phase 4 Implement and Adjust
How would you assess the learning, not just the playing?
What would authentic feedback sound like, moving beyond who won to analyzing the strategic thinking behind the moves?
Phase 5 Reflect and Refine
How would you celebrate not just the champion, but the most improved player, the best sport, or the most insightful strategist?
What reflection prompts would help students think about their own thinking, and enable you to revise the lesson for next time?

Some of the world’s most powerful teaching frameworks don’t itemize competencies at all; they begin with relationships, community, land, language, and identity, and treat learning as inseparable from them.
